This month I wanted to share with you an important & truly great organization, Environmental Working Group. You've probably heard of their work - they're the ones responsible for getting a carcinogen removed from Teflon, spreading the word about how safe sunscreens really are, and creating an extensive cosmetics safety database.

You can join their email list at or check out their website at

They have a lot of great resources like:

Skin Deep, their cosmetics safety database

Food News, the insider's guide to which produce has the most pesticides

EWG's Fish List, which outlines which fish are the safest and how often you should eat them

10 Everyday Pollution Solutions, a list of small steps you can take to make a big difference

Parent's Buying Guide to safe personal care products for kids

Many people want to use safe products on their family and themselves, however they do not know how to determine what is or is not safe.  These websites are excellent references.  EWG does their scientific homework, and have been around a long time.  It's kind of fun to look up a product you currently use to see how carcinogenic or safe it is.  Take advantage of their expertise.  Find new safe products based on your discoveries.

Please note:  A toxic build-up occurs more readily in the young than in adults.  It is extremely important that we watch what we use on children - i.e. no baby oil (it has mineral oil in it, which actually robs your body of minerals), no talcum powder - it is carcinogenic.  Use corn starch instead (look for organic, as corn is highly genetically modified - a whole other issue!), look up safe alternatives on EWG's above mentioned sites.

Join their email list to receive buying guides for safe children's products; info on cosmetics, sunscreens, and products to avoid; tips for making your food and water safer, and answers to your questions about keeping your family healthy. Sign up today at

Environmental Working Group is a non-profit, non-partisan research organization dedicated to using the power of information to protect human health and the environment.

Let's make this school year a safe and healthy one.  Get plenty of sleep, fresh - locally grown produce, outdoor exercise, fresh air and supplement with vitamins and minerals to reduce tension, toxins and bugs that seem to breed in the school environment.  Laugh and find joy in life, laughter truly is the best medicine!

Recipe - Frozen Fruit Pop
Buy Organic whenever possible

1 cup fresh or frozen fruits - melons, berries, mangos, peaches...
1/2 cup of organic coconut milk
1/4 cup of berry, apple, pineapple, cherry, grape or whatever fruit juice you love (no sugar)

1 - In a blender or food processor, add all ingredients, blend about 2 - 3 minutes.  When completely blended into a thick juice, pour it into small dessert cups and put a toothpick for a handle after it's been frozen.

2 - Freeze and serve.  MMM, it's a yummy, sugar free dessert containing many antioxidants and healthy fat.  Enjoy!

For a slushy drink, freeze above in ice-cube tray, pop the cubes out after frozen and blend for an icy, yet creamy drink.  Top off with a berry :)

As always get creative and e-mail me your favorite variations!
